Presumed Innocent Episode 8 aka, the season finale of the Apple TV+ series starring Jake Gyllenhaal is finally here, and it serves as the perfect conclusion to a premise filled with murder, suspense, and so many questions. Once again, Gyllenhaal excels in this episode, even more so than the rest of the series, and we will explore that a little more in this review.

Sadly, Presumed Innocent has come to an end with 8 episodes, much like most series on Apple TV+, but this conclusion to the murder of Carolyn Polhemus won’t leave you feeling unsatisfied, and that’s ultimately what matters the most.

So, keep reading this review to find out more about the season finale, and beware because there will be spoilers ahead!

Who Killed Carolyn Polhemus?

Presumed Innocent Episode 8 begins with police gathering all the evidence from Tommy Molto’s house. Tommy is convinced that it was Rusty Sabich who planted Carolyn’s potential murder weapon there.

Later, Rusty, Tommy, Raymond, and others get together with the judge, and once again, Rusty is quick to lose his cool after accusations from Tommy. At this point, this should come as no shocker, as the previous episodes have often hinted at Rusty’s short-tempered personality, which often put him in the spotlight.

The trial continues the next day, both Raymond and Tommy are in their best form to question those on the stand, and while Raymond does everything he can to prove Rusty’s innocence, Tommy one-ups him.

Meanwhile, Rusty is convinced that he is his best chance, which is why he will deliver the closing arguments to the jury at the trial. With more than half the episode of Presumed Innocent finale still left, it’s time for everyone to be at the edge of their seats, and that’s exactly what happens.

In his closing statement, Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays the role of Rusty Sabich, delivers a splendid performance, his best in this series so far. This part of the finale is by far the highlight of the entire series, and all credit goes to the writers, and of course, Gyllenhaal. It helps provide a summary of sorts of the turmoil Rusty has been through since the murder of Carolyn.

After Rusty, it was time for Tommy to deliver his closing argument, and as far as our opinion goes, keeping aside our admiration for Gyllenhaal in this series, Tommy’s closing statement fell short of that convincing factor that Rusty had.

Nevertheless, ultimately, it was all about the jury’s decision. The wait was excruciating, and Presumed Innocent, from the very first episode, until the end, has done a phenomenal job of keeping the viewers guessing.

Not guilty. It was a matter of two words that was more than enough for us to breathe a sigh of relief, but the most important part of the anticipation and eventually the verdict was the fact that Presumed Innocent Episode 8 felt like a finale. And then, there was the biggest question of all time – Who killed Carolyn Polhemus?

The finale has all the answers one would need, and it is more than enough to earn a large gasp from the viewers, that’s the whole point of a crime thriller, especially when there’s a murder involved. Presumed Innocent was an absolute winner of a series, and one can only hope there will be another season.
