Netflix has been churning out plenty of original content in 2024 as the year approaches the holiday season, some of the bigger titles are being released, which include Lonely Planet, directed by Susannah Grant (Catch and Release, Unbelievable). One of the more fascinating aspects of this latest romance movie is the star-studded cast!

Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern make an unlikely pair, but Netflix can truly bring anyone together. In this review, we will explore more details about the movie, along with Dern and Hemsworth’s performances, and whether or not Lonely Planet deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern Bring Heat to the Screen

We land in Morrocco in the opening scene of Lonely Planet, and we have to admit, we can never get tired of seeing Laura Dern on our screens.

So, no matter how good, bad, or ugly this movie gets, watching Dern will be the highlight of it all, and this helps put into perspective how important star power casting can be in certain movies and shows.

Dern’s character, Katherine, finds herself in a gorgeous writers’ retreat for work, and the views in this movie might just be more stunning than Hemsworth and Dern combined. Sometimes, as long as a movie looks good, a few lows and hiccups in the narrative can be ignored, but we’re hoping that isn’t the case with Lonely Planet.

Owen, played by Hemsworth, is next to arrive at the writers’ retreat along with his girlfriend, who happens to be a writer. The “lonely” in the title begins to make sense fairly early in the movie.

Owen, despite having a girlfriend who dedicated a book to him feels like he is all alone, and Katherine is spending all her time cooped up in her room, refusing to meet people.

As much as Dern and Hemsworth seem like an unlikely pair, so do Katherine and Owen, to begin with at least. However, as the movie progresses, they also make more sense together, it somehow just works.

The beautiful backdrop in the entire movie, mixed with a charming male lead, and a breathtaking female lead was more than enough to keep us hooked, despite the lackluster narrative that tagged along.

We’re not saying the narrative was necessarily poor or boring, it simply felt like a compilation of things that have been done before…a lot. But again, is anything original anymore?

The chemistry between Hemsworth and Dern comes as the biggest shock, because to us, that quickly became the highlight of Lonely Planet, apart from just Dern’s presence.

There are no big twists or turns, nothing to really take your breath away when it comes to this romance drama, but the different elements are more than enough to make it an entertaining watch when you’re curled up in bed.

Our favorite line from Lonely Planet comes at the very end when Katherine says, “Just know you were never the distraction. You were the whole point.”

Conclusion

If you are a sucker for the romance drama genre, then Lonely Planet will be right up your alley, and the sensual chemistry between Dern and Hemsworth is undeniable. We wouldn’t mind seeing them together in more projects!
