Mark Wahlberg (Arthur the King, The Family Plan) and Halle Berry (Catwoman, Monster’s Ball) have come together to star in Netflix‘s latest movie, The Union, directed by Julian Farino (The Oranges, Up New Generation). Wahlberg and Berry might appear as an unlikely pairing, especially for an action-comedy, but we after watching The Union, something about this pairing just works.
We have to admit, for us, this was one of Berry’s most phenomenal performances, and we can guarantee you will also feel the same way. So, without wasting too much of your time, here’s our review of The Union, which will help you decide whether you want to stream it or skip it.
Just the Right Amount of Action and Comedy
The opening scene of The Union confirms that there will be good quality action to look forward to in this movie, along with an actual plot, which sometimes is a hit or miss when it comes to action comedies.
There are explosions, gunshots, dead people, and everything you would look for in an action movie right at the beginning of the movie, and the bar has immediately been set high.

In contrast to the explosive opening where we are introduced to Roxanne and Tom Brennan, is the next scene, bright, almost too bright for eyes where the movie welcomes Mike McKenna, who has spent the night with his seventh-grade English teacher.
This scene helps establish Mike’s personality. He’s a sweet guy, lives with his mother, and has a hard-working job, but his life is about to change.
Enter Roxxane. This scene might be familiar from the trailer and promotions for The Union, but watching it in a more elaborate form, we can conclude that it is a lot more entertaining.
After a fun night together, the next morning, Mike wakes up in a place he can’t recognize, and this is where the movie really begins.

The Union needs someone “clean” for their next mission, a part of which went terribly wrong in the first scene of the movie. They are convinced that Mike is their guy, and a confused Mike has no idea what’s going on with him, even after Roxxane and Tom have briefed him. Ultimately, this is a work of fiction, and that is reflected in this bizarre plot, but it is still fun to watch, from start to finish.
There are certain points in the movie where the narrative feels a little dragged out, but the action and comedy make up for it quickly. There is also some tension between Mike and Roxxane from their past, which comes up during a car chase.
Classic! Overall, in many ways The Union is nothing but entertaining, however, Simmons, Wahlberg, and Berry all deliver standout performances in a span of 100 minutes, which makes it worth a stream.
