Social media has successfully cemented a spot for itself in today’s world, and almost anyone and everyone uses platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, which are now flooded with an influx of influencers.
An influencer is precisely anyone who can influence someone with their work, be it charity, or even putting the right serum during a skin-care routine, it really is that vast.
To capitalize on this new age infatuation amongst people from all generations, Netflix has released a new series, The Influencer. This series brings together influencers from Korea in a competition where one of them will become the ultimate influencer.
With the first four episodes now available to stream, is this reality series worth a watch?
Is This the New Normal?
The first episode of The Influencer is one hour and 20 minutes long, and immediately this feels like a daunting number. If you felt the same, we’re all in the same boat, but fret now, because shockingly enough, it isn’t a dull episode.
Because this is a reality series with 77 influencers, we were expecting the claws to come out in the first few minutes, but that didn’t happen.

The introductions were the first part of the episode, and we quickly realized that this series was going to have all kinds of influencers, from all categories, some that you might not even be familiar with.
In some ways, The Influencer almost feels educational, given how important social media is today, but we couldn’t help but wonder if this series actually has much of a purpose or meaning.
Nevertheless, we kept those thoughts aside and decided to indulge in this series as someone who might be hooked on social media, endlessly scrolling through reels, shorts, and TikToks, because only then can you enjoy it.
One aspect that really stood out was the collars on the necks of the contestants which represented the number of followers they have. It felt odd but informative.

It was interesting witnessing all the influencers interact with each other during the flamboyant introductions, which were definitely entertaining and would also serve as a helping hand for the viewers to understand the contestants better.
There was definitely some jealousy, and a few snarky comments, and ultimately, The Influencer is a reality series, just with a different premise.
There were eliminations from the second episode itself, and it made sense considering just how many contestants there were. While The Influencer was engaging in some ways, it felt more like a talent show at several points, and everything that was being done was for likes and dislikes.
Often, it was simply difficult to keep up with all the contestants, and we couldn’t even pick a favorite!

Frankly, we have far too many mixed feelings about The Influencer, but chances are, if you are well-versed with the Korean influencer community, one that spans several platforms and different types of content, then you might just enjoy it. Otherwise, it’s just another background series!
Conclusion
Netflix has set the standard high when it comes to reality series, but as for The Influencer, we would recommend going in with fewer expectations! Do let us know in the comments what you think about this series.
