Natalie Portman’s debut on the small screen, away from blockbuster hits, was on Apple TV+’s series, Lady in the Lake, and after 7 episodes, this mini-series has to come to an end. Frankly, this is a bittersweet feeling, as we had expected it to be.

It’s sweet because Lady in the Lake could have ultimately been a movie, and it didn’t need to be expanded to 7 episodes, and we’re glad it ended at the right time.

It is bitter because Portman and Moses Ingram delivered some of their finest performances in this series, and it was a pleasure to see them on our screens, even though they didn’t have many scenes together.

Nevertheless, this chapter has come to an end, and we’re here to share our review of Lady in the Lake Episode 7, aka the series finale!

Do Cleo and Maddie Get What They Want?

Lady in the Lake Episode 7 is an hour long, so make sure you’re buckled in for this finale, but we can tell you ahead of time, that there are plenty of moments where you might find yourself wanting to pause the episode, take a break, and then get back into it.

Most episodes of this mini-series have been graced with lengthy titles, however, this one simply said, “My story.”

We are welcomed with a flashback to 1952 when Cleo Johnson and Dora are spending time together outside Shell Gordon’s club, and this moment can be marked as the beginning of it all, especially since it is when Cleo meets Slappy for the first time.

This is also the moment the women get wrapped into Gordon’s business, and there’s no turning back. After this, we learn about Dora’s death, which only Reggie and Cleo are aware of, as they dress Dora up as Cleo, which ultimately helps Cleo fake her death. So, Maddie wasn’t dreaming in the previous episode.

After the opening credits, we’re back to the present time, where Cleo and Maddie are at the hospital, the point where Episode 6 ended. Maddie is obviously shocked since she was at Cleo’s funeral. But Cleo is calm and composed as she explains what happened.

Cleo also asks Maddie to stop investigating her death and writing her story, because that might just be what actually kills her.

In the series finale of Lady in the Lake, Cleo’s intentions are clear – she wants to take down Shell Gordon. In addition, Cleo also convinces Maddie that the latter can be the reporter who exposes the man.

That’s ultimately what Maddie wanted, one big story! In some ways, this episode gets the job done as the finale of the series, but in other ways, it leaves us wondering if we really needed 7 episodes to reach this point.

Maddie and Ferde Platt also have a moment together after she has left the hospital, where he offers to uproot her life and move states with him so they can live together as an interracial couple, but Maddie is clearly overwhelmed and has much left to do when it comes to Cleo. Maddie also meets Slappy, in hopes of getting more information, but alas that doesn’t happen.

Ultimately, the climax of the series boils down to Cleo taking down Shell Gordon, which is kind of what the series has hinted at from the beginning, but we were convinced it would be more of a murder mystery instead.

Lady in the Lake Episode 7 ties most of its loose ends and it doesn’t leave too much room for a second season, which is probably for the best. Cleo and Maddie ultimately get what they want, although everything comes at a price in this series!

Conclusion

Lady in the Lake Episode 7 was mediocre at best for the conclusion of the series, and we’re left with a bittersweet feeling at the end, as we mentioned earlier. Do let us know in the comments below what you thought about the series finale!
