Dark comedy and psychological horror are two genres that have seen an impressive rise in the last few years, and sometimes, they’re both paired together, the result is almost always satisfactory. This brings us to Netflix‘s latest movie, It’s What’s Inside starring Alycia Debnam-Carey, Gavin Leatherwood, Reina Hardesty, David W. Thompson, and James Morosini among many others.

Directed by Greg Jardin, It’s What’s Inside invites the viewers into a unique pre-wedding party where things are never as they seem after the attendees are introduced to something bizarre. In this review, we will explore more details of the movie, and what worked versus what didn’t work, so make sure you stick along!

As Bizarre as it Can Possibly Get

The opening scene of It’s What’s Inside introduces us to a handful of the complex characters who become central to the ongoing narrative.

We begin with an awkward fight between Shelby and Cyrus who are struggling to have sex with one another, despite Shelby trying a wig on, which was originally Cyrus’ idea. This, along with the little introductions other characters get is more than enough to establish that this movie will be a wild ride.

It won’t take you long to realize that It’s What’s Inside relies heavily on the editing, which gives the scenes an offbeat and unsettling effect, almost making you dizzy from time to time, but in some ways, this was expected given how the trailer of the movie was. Nevertheless, it can be labeled cool and experimental at best, at least to begin with.

All characters in this movie are so ridiculously different from each other, yet somehow they share the same vibe, for lack of a better word. Everyone other than Forbes, who is supposedly the weird one of the lot, however, that adjective can used to describe many characters in It’s What’s Inside, but Forbes helps drive the narrative towards the real bizzareness that lies ahead.

The party had begun, but the plot actually begins after Forbes arrives which is somewhere around the 20-minute work. Until then, you might find yourself trying to remember everyone’s names and the dynamics between them. Forbes and his suitcase are the most obscure parts of the movie, and instead of telling his old buddies what’s in it, he decides to show them instead.

From this point on, everything that happens is trippy, which is exactly how it should be going, but it gets even more interesting when you realize that this movie is attempting one of the craziest body swaps of all time. The whole group has switched bodies, and it is an outlandish experience for all, they want to do it again, and the room is spinning, quite literally.

This quickly turns into a game of guess who with multiple rounds, and we have to admit, it is entertaining and you will find yourself constantly curious about what’s coming next.

While it is all fun and games to begin with, but eventually, it gets messy and things go haywire. Albeit, It’s What’s Inside constantly remains an experience that needs you to stick around until the end because you never know what’s in store.

Conclusion

In some ways, It’s What’s Inside was just above average, but because of how unique it was compared to most movies of this genre, we would highly recommend adding it to your watchlist.
