Directed by Malcolm Venville, the Netflix docuseries Churchill at War delves into the life of Winston Churchill, exploring his accomplishments from the time he rose to power in 1940. While Churchill has been the subject of numerous documentaries and docuseries, this four-part series attempts to differentiate itself from others.

The question remains, however: does it succeed in offering a fresh perspective on Churchill’s legacy? Throughout 4 episodes, Churchill at War remains constantly informative and a treat for history lovers, especially those who have often focused on Churchill, and here’s our review of the same!

A Docuseries for the History Buffs!

Churchill at War opens in 1940s London, preceded by an introduction to Winston Churchill’s significant contributions and a preview of the extensive archival footage woven throughout the docuseries. This archival footage proves pivotal in shaping the narrative, offering a fresh perspective and unveiling previously unseen insights.

Amongst other things, Churchill is known for his words, particularly his speeches, which have often been more impactful than any other leader in history and is of course, another integral part of Churchill at War. Frankly, certain parts of his speeches might give you goosebumps, especially if you’ve previously indulged in his speeches or written work.

While this title is strictly a docuseries, it breaks the norm, much like other recent docuseries, by hiring actors to play certain parts in hopes of enhancing the quality with severe dramatization.

Now, you can expect to see plenty of that in this Churchill docuseries, and we have to admit, it doesn’t always work in favor of the title. If anything, It appears over the top.

It should come as no surprise that the archival footage (most of it colorized) and the interviews scattered across four episodes are the saving grace when it comes to Churchill at War on Netflix.

All key points spoken about Churchill in this docuseries aren’t necessarily fresh but are presented in a fresh manner, which can appeal to those who enjoy documentaries based on historical figures.

Churchill at War is informative and gripping and takes its time to elaborately talk about Churchill from 1940 and beyond, a time which has often been studied in history books, and extensively by historians.

While this docuseries isn’t the best one Netflix has released this year, it does offer the use of AI to help revisit the second world war, in clips that haven’t been viewed before. Again, a treat for the history buffs!

Conclusion

Winston Churchill has been loved by many but has also been criticized for his ways by many, and this docuseries is for the former section of people. So, if you have a book of Churchill’s speeches on your nightstand, chances are you will thoroughly enjoy this docuseries!
